Barbados: Just around the corner, still beyond your imagination - Features

The Strand : "Some might consider my summer destination very exciting, but to me, spending two months in Barbados was simply spending quality time at home. As a local I often take for granted the beautiful beaches, the gorgeous weather, and the blue skies - but I must say that Toronto winters have helped to cure that a little bit. Some might consider my summer destination very exciting, but to me, spending two months in Barbados was simply spending quality time at home. A taste of BARBADOS!

Jamaica Gleaner News : "As a 'foodie' who specialises in the love of good traditional food 'as-it-really-is' and 'taken-up-a-notch', I can advise - book those flights immediately for Barbados. The airline industry seems to be in 'crazy-mode', so the only way to get from one island to the next if you don't book and pay early, is to swim, and I am sure we all prefer shark on the menu without us as stuffing! Barbados offers accommodation to suit all pockets so that's not an issue; getting "

Ichirouganaim

I hate to look at the Barbados tourists site that give the history of Barbados. The ones that talk of Columbus discovering these islands and the other foolish tales that the Bob Marley and Burning Spear called 'mis-education'.I agree with them as a matter of fact Burning Spear referred to Christopher Columbus as a 'damn blasted liar'.Thank god for Rastafari. One of the funniest stories is the one of the bearded fig tree and the name Los Barbados which was supposed to mean 'the bearded one'. In the words of Gary Cole from the book reflections; The Colonization of Barbados is one of the darkest events and evil stories of modern history.Four centuries ago,Spanish and Portuguese slavers started to kidnap, kill and drive out the thousands of peaceful Indians found on the island the Indians called Ichirouganaim. The exact location of the island was a carefully kept secret but Spanish and Portuguese soldiers and sailors knew the island as the barbarous island,"Los B

Rihanna wins two MTV awards

Not bad for a Combermere good girl gone bad . The Nation Newspaper Rihanna wins two MTV awards : "BAJAN MUSIC star Rihanna took two top awards when the world-renowned MusicTelevision (MTV) hosted its annual video music awards ceremony in Las Vegas, Nevada, Sunday night. The 19-year-old, whose 2007 single Umbrella spent ten weeks at No. 1 in Britain, took MTV's Single Of The Year award, beating the likes of Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West and Amy Winehouse" Also this Caribbean queen The Star online Rihanna, the latest R&B starlet, hails from Barbados and what a sizzler she is. Yes, Rihanna is hot. With her luscious bronzed skin and those US$1mil-insured legs that go on for miles – well, at least in the publicity shots and that sizzling music video with her dancing with a cane and a bowler hat – she is smokin’ hot. And she is blazing charts everywhere, with her recent single Umbrella making it to the top in the United States and Britain, among other countries.
I may not be the typical Bajan as I keep saying. Why? It seems to me that Bajans are becoming more and more obsessed about food.Everywhere you turn there seems to be some new food outlet springing up.It is just not that,it seems to me that many times the conversation is about food. Once upon a time pudding and souse used to be served mainly on Saturdays but now it is on the menu everyday, not for me though.I can eat the Black Pudding but eating animals is a no-no.You may or may not be aware that souse is a specially prepared pickled pig devoured by most Bajans. I think one of the more interesting snacks is fish cakes.I think it is prepared a little different now than in days of old but is definitely popular and could be healthy. Obesity is now a major problem in Barbados and without a doubt overeating and the consumption of animals is a major contributing factor with Barbados rated somewhere at number 12 in the world. This means we have a world ranking. If you love food, obses
166 square miles is a very small size for an island.A very small island.Living on Barbados you never ever get the feeling that it is that small. They are many people who have never left the island and who never have any intention of leaving.I certainly don't claim to have that strong an affinity for Barbados. It is just an island that I just happened to have been born on,yet i have never travelled to any other place so far that I like more than Barbados. Barbados is a nation of talkers. It is much more important to talk than to do.I suspect that may be why there are so many priests and politicians. Now most of the Bajan blogs have joined the fray and once more the talk is of politics and politicians. Did you notice that during the recent apartment collapse that the media was only interested in the opinions and ideas of the politicians? Instead of the taking queries to the technical and rescue personnel all queries were directed to a politician. Such is life on Barbados.
